Sense of Belonging for African-American High School Students

Wallenberg High School will be using their 2017-18 Innovation Award for culturally relevant pedagogical professional development and to launch a mentorship program.

The Challenge

Wallenberg’s African American students reported feeling unsupported both by staff and their fellow students. African American students were suspended at a higher rate than others. SBAC ELA and Math scores further demonstrate the on-going opportunity/achievement gap. SEL survey scores also indicate a lack of belonging, and student leaders of their BSU gave specific examples of how their work was not lifted up by Wallenberg staff and other students. The school is figuring out how to ensure that African American students’ experience at Wallenberg is one where they feel welcomed, supported and uplifted.
